The Story

Maria Skłodowska grew up in Warsaw when Poland was under Russian control and advanced education was restricted, especially for women. She studied through underground educational networks, worked as a governess, and saved money while helping support her sister's education. Only later could she travel to Paris and enroll at the Sorbonne. In Paris, she studied under difficult financial conditions and entered a scientific culture that offered women little room. Her investigation of uranium radiation led her and Pierre Curie to identify polonium and radium. The work was physically demanding, methodical, and performed with equipment far less sophisticated than the instruments scientists use today. In 1903, she shared the Nobel Prize in Physics. Three years later, Pierre died suddenly. Curie continued their work, took his university position, and became the first woman to teach at the Sorbonne. In 1911, she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry---becoming the first person awarded Nobel Prizes in two scientific fields. During World War I, she helped organize mobile X-ray units so wounded soldiers could be examined closer to the front. Her story is not simply about brilliance. It is about gaining access, enduring loss, continuing the work, and using discovery in service of others.
